Sweet potatoes contain many nutritional values. They are sweet, juicy and very aromatic. Sweet potatoes are one of the very good sources of energy. Compared to traditional potatoes, they contain over 50% more vitamins and minerals. In addition, they regulate blood glucose levels. Today we check how to cook sweet potatoes.
How to cook sweet potatoes?
Sweet potatoes are vegetables that can be prepared in many tasty ways. However, we usually cook these sweet, tuberous vegetables. How to do it best?
Sweet potatoes can be cooked identically to normal potatoes. They will taste delicious both when we cook them as a whole, and when we first peel them from the skin and cut them into pieces.
To cook the whole sweet potatoes, it is best to put them in cold water – they will cook evenly and will not be raw or glassy inside. However, sweet potatoes cut into pieces are best put in only when the water begins to boil. Regardless of the method of cooking, immediately after setting the water, salt it (2 tablespoons of salt per 1 liter of water) and slightly sweeten (1 teaspoon per liter of water).
The sweet potatoes should be cooked under the cover, which prevents the evaporation of valuable minerals. Many guides recommend cooking them for about 30 minutes. However, we think that it is best to check their softness with a fork. If it enters the vegetables lightly, it is a sign that they are ready to drain!
What to use sweet potatoes for?
The use of sweet potatoes in the kitchen is very wide. After cooking, they can be served (like potatoes) with salad, meat, fish, other vegetables or sauce. Sweet potatoes also taste great when baked with butter, herbs and spices; we can make chips, French fries or original soup!
Among the many excellent dishes you will find a recipe for potato salad with sweet potatoes, ideal for a snack. Be sure to try the delicious sweet potato soup, which is worth spicing up with carrots, leeks, fresh herbs and aromatic spices.
A healthy version of sweet potatoes
Sweet potatoes can be baked in the oven but require prior preparation. There are several ways to prepare potatoes before baking. However, regardless of the method of preparation, the oven must be set to about 220-230 degrees. Potatoes should be baked at this temperature for about 30-45 minutes, depending on their size.
To prepare a healthy version of baked potatoes, all you need to do is brush it with olive oil, sprinkle with a little sea salt and place it on the top shelf in the oven. Olive oil is a healthy fat and thanks to it, the potatoes will form a crispy crust. However, if you do not worry about counting calories so much, you can add a tablespoon of butter to potatoes and lightly coat them in a mixture of sugar and cinnamon. Put potatoes prepared in this way in foil so that they do not lose butter during baking and taste cinnamon. After baking, remove the potatoes from the oven, add a little butter and the spices you like best. For the sweet version, salt and pepper taste great.
